Peninsula Park Rose Test Gardens, Portland Oregon
The Rose Garden in North Portland established in 1912 was Portland's first rose garden and in 1913, the gardens earned Portland the nickname, "The City of Roses." In 1917 The site for Portland's International Rose Show and other festivities moved to what is now considered the official Portland Rose Gardens in Washington Park in NW Portland.

What makes Peninsula Park special For Danny and I, is that it was the first park we drove by and not in wedding planning mode, three years ago, we both said, "This is where we are getting married." According to Portland Public Parks, Peninsula Park is unique in that it holds historical significance for the city or Portland:

"Other original design elements remain today - the ornamental fountain, street lamps, brick walkways, and the music pavilion. This octagonal bandstand overlooking the rose garden was used for World War I patriotic demonstrations and is now the site for many summer weddings and concerts. This wonderful gazebo-like structure is a National Heritage historical structure and was designated a Portland Historic Landmark in 1973. It is the last of its kind in Portland.

Parking: Peninsula park is a large park with free parking around the perimeter. There are also several neighborhood streets close by with free parking. The park is close to PCC Cascade and the streets directly around the campus are monitored for students using the neighborhood parking paces to park for going to class. On Saturday this is not an issue. Just make sure not to park in the PCC Cascade parking lot.

Danny and I are so excited to hold our ceremony in such a historic place. After the ceremony, see schedule post, there will be time for our guests to enjoy Peninsula Park. Please take some time to experience all the beauty surrounding you.

Reception

The Reception at Columbia Point West Clubhouse

The Reception will be held at Columbia Point West Clubhouse on Hayden Island. It is a short drive from the ceremony location, Peninsula Park, to the clubhouse on Hayden Island/Jantzen Beach. It should take about five to seven minutes to drive from the park to Columbia Point West at that time on Saturday.

Parking: There is guest parking in front of the clubhouse, across the clubhouse against the curb, and there is a large guest parking lot around the corner of the clubhouse and recreation center. There should be ample parking for everyone. There is no parking for guests in the condo's parking garage.

Attire: The Groom and Groomsmen will be wearing Hawaiin wedding shirts. Dress is upscale casual, like one would dress for a fancy garden party. Yet please feel comfortable to wear whatever you will feel good in, there is no strict dress code; upscale casual is just a guideline.

Directions: Please enter these addresses into MapQuest for step by step directions. I could not find a way to enter in a map with directions on MapQuest to insert into the blog. Here are my directions if this is helpful to anyone: Take 1-5 N from the entrance from Rosa Park and get off at the Hayden Island Exit. The exit curves around and comes to a four way stop where you will see a Chevron on you right. Stop and stay in the lane to go straight and then go straight. North Hayden Island Drive will be on your left soon after the four way stop. You will take a left soon after the Fire station on your right. Follow the road all the way down until you see the recreation room for Columbia Point West. At that point there are several places you may park safely.

Schedule

Schedule

Here is the Wedding Ceremony and Reception schedule as it stands now. The schedule is flexible; this should help give you a general sense of the order of events.

10:30 Guests gather at the gazebo in Peninsula Park for the ceremony. There will be around eight chairs for those who need to sit, otherwise since this cermony will be lovely, but quick, we are asking that the other guests stand and surround us for the ceremony.

10:45 Procession: Groom, Groomsmen & Bridesmaids, Flower Girl, thank you Mira, and The Bride.

11:00 Exchanging of vows, words by our friend and officiator, Matt Brownlee, and The Kiss.

11:20 Guests may walk and explore the beauty of Peninsula Park or go straight to the Clubhouse for the reception. Take note that Leslie and Danny will arrive at the clubhouse around 12:30, so please make sure you are inside the clubhouse by 12:30.

11:20-12:30 We would like to give you time to enjoy the beauty of Peninsula Park and when you are ready you may make your way to the clubhouse. The clubhouse is only 3-4 exits down I-5 N from the Park, so it should take no more than 10 minutes to get there. There is a chance that the Vancouver bridge may be up or there may be early traffic; Yet, usually on Saturday at this time there is not too much traffic. If you are concerned about potential bad traffic, give yourself 20 minutes to get to the clubhouse. Once at the clubhouse, relax and mingle at the clubhouse before the new couple arrives. Our hostess will welcome guests and show them where to put coats, cards, gifts, where to sign the guestbook and offer a glass of wine or beer, non-alcoholic punch and other non-alcoholic beverages.

11:20-12:10 While at the at Peninsula Park both families, the wedding party and the new couple will take pictures. Photography is by a very talented friend and professional photographer, Chris Keller. You can check out Chris's photography at CJK Photography. Thank you, Chris!

12:30 Danny and Leslie, family and the wedding party will arrive  at the clubhouse. The new couple: Danny and Leslie Pearson will be announced.

12:30-1:00 First dance and toasts. We are not having a true dance floor, there will be enough room for a first dance and a dance with my stepfather, Jeffry Hill.

Note:All dance phobics can relax. If you must get your groove on, the reception ends at 5 p.m. and there will be plenty of time to dance the night away in Portland. Jantzen Beach does not boast of a nightlife where dancing is an integral part, yet if you are looking for a place to have a few drinks and relax, Jantzen Beach has many offering. I suggest The Anchor Bar or where I work, Boomer's BBQ.

If you are looking for nightlife, live music, or dancing, there are many places in downtown Portland where you can get your groove on. May I suggest looking at our local smaller press papers, The Portland Tribune, Willamette Week and The Portland Mercury. These papers, especially The Portland Mercury, are good sources to look at for what's going on in Portland on an given Saturday, not just dancing, but all sorts of bars, comedy clubs, jazz clubs, live music, traditional and live karaoke, burlesque shows, all night sushi bars and anything else you can think of.

1:30 Buffet lunch. We do not have seating assignments for our guests. You may sit wherever you like. There will be tables inside and outside as well as couches and comfy chairs.

3:00 Dessert, coffee and cutting of the cake.

4:45 Gather for the bouquet toss and to usher the new couple as they leave for their honeymoon (Thanks, Myra and Jon Gevurtz).

There will be plenty of time for our guests to talk and mingle with each other. You are here for our wedding; yet, we want each and every one of you to have a great time.

Please feel free to call Danny or Me with any questions or concerns.

"I don’t know how you are so familiar to me—or why it feels less like I am getting to know you and more as though I am remembering who you are. How every smile, every whisper brings me closer to the impossible conclusion that I have known you before, I have loved you before—in another time, a different place, some other existence.”

We welcome all our guests too to join us in the celebration. Thank you for your attendance. Be yourself and fill the space with love and well wishes for our future.
